UK Government sets December deadline for reaching NI Protocol agreement with EU

A deadline of this December has been set for the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) to reach an agreement on the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Brexit Minister David Frost said both sides want the dispute settled before the winter, but noted that significant gaps remain between both parties.

Frost further stood by the position that the UK would not accept a role for the European Court of Justice (ECJ) as an arbitrator of the protocol.

He was asked how long Britain was prepared to continue talks with the EU before triggering Article 16 – a move that would suspend the treaty – to which he said both parties want the issue solved before December.

“We have always been clear we don’t want this situation to run on for a very long time and, to be fair to the commission, they have said that as well,” he said.

“We all see this as an issue for this autumn, to be settled one way or the other.”

The UK and the EU begin another round of talks on Tuesday in London, with the aim of attempting to find a solution to the Protocol.
