Russia reports its highest number of Covid-19 cases since pandemic began

Russia has reported its highest number of Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the past 24 hours, Russia has reported 37,930 new cases of Covid-19 which has prompted the Kremlin to tell people to avoid going to work starting later this week.

An additional 1,069 Covid-19-related deaths have been reported in the same period.

Under orders from President Vladimir Putin, Russians have been told to not go to work between October 30th and November 7th.

In some areas that have been greatly affected by the virus, the non-working week could begin earlier and be extended beyond November 7th.

Officials in Moscow plan to begin the off-work period on Thursday which will see the closure of gyms, most entertainment venues, stores, schools and nurseries for 11 days.

Restaurants and cafés will remain open for takeaway or delivery orders while food stores and pharmacies will stay open.

Proof of vaccination or past illness will grant access to museums, theatres, concert halls and other venues, and is expected to remain in place beyond November 7th.
