COVID-19: Significant number of pregnant women requiring ICU care in hospital

According to the chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Dr. Cliona Murphy, twenty pregnant or postpartum women have required ICU treatment for Covid-19 since the end of June.

She described the number as “striking” while adding that the vast majority of the women were unvaccinated.

She said that three women from maternity hospitals in Dublin were moved to general hospitals for ventilation and ICU care, to which she says “has given us a bit of shock,”.

From November of last year to June of this year, 22 women who were pregnant or had recently given birth required ICU care, which she said is a significant number to have in the space of four months.

Dr. Murphy said that obstetrics might see one seriously ill mother a year requiring Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), however, she said that there has been quite a handful of mothers who require this kind of treatment, which she described as “extraordinary”.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has said that a disproportionate number of pregnant women are requiring ICU treatment, with Dr. Colm Henry stating that he would like to see more pregnant women come forward for vaccination.
