WATCH: There is always the possibility of restrictions being reintroduced – Varadkar

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has stated that there is always a possibility of restrictions being reintroduced while encouraging people to get vaccinated and adhere to public health guidelines.

Varadkar stated that although the possibility of restrictions being reintroduced exists, the aim is to “get through this winter without imposing restrictions.”

Varadkar also stated that it is becoming increasingly clear that “Covid is going to be with us forever, it’s going to become an endemic virus that is seasonal in nature”.

He said that the government and the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) believe that lockdowns don’t seem appropriate as 90% of the population is now fully vaccinated.

Although worried about the pandemic, Varadkar stated that he didn’t want to create any worries among people in relation to Christmas, saying “that would not be fair.”

“I have always expressed the view we need to get through another winter before this is safely behind us. We cannot keep the country locked down forever. It’s going to be difficult, but I think we can handle it.”

Taoiseach Micheál Martin was asked if he could guarantee that there would not be a resumption of restrictions by Christmas, to which he replied by saying that the vaccinations are providing significant protection to the country. He added that experts were analysing Covid-19 all the time.

“The phase we’re now in does speak to a collective effort from everybody to be cautious.”
