Russia reports cases from more contagious Covid-19 variant

A new Covid-19 variant that is believed to be more contagious than the Delta variant is behind some of Russia’s latest Covid-19 infections, according to the RIA news agency.

The AY.4.2 variant is expected to spread widely, according to the state consumer watchdog’s senior researcher Kamil Khafizov.

Concerns have arisen that this new variant could cause the Covid-19 rate of Russia to increase, which is already at record highs.

Khafizov said that the new variant could replace Delta eventually although it’s expected that the process is likely to be slow.

In the past 24 hours, Russia hit another daily record of 1,028 deaths and 34,073 new cases of Covid-19 yesterday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a government proposal for a week-long workplace shutdown beginning at the start of next month.

Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine is not expected to be approved until at least the first quarter of 2022 as some data required for the review is still missing.

If the data is received by the end of next month, regulators may decide on the vaccine’s approval in the first quarter of next year.

The results of the Phase III trials which were published in The Lancet back in February revealed that the vaccine is almost 92% effective against Covid-19.

One source indicated that there was no reason to doubt the effectiveness of the vaccine, which is said to be 83% effective against the Delta variant, as it has been widely used in Russia and approved for use in over 70 countries.
