Netflix staff join protesters outside headquarters over Dave Chappelle stand-up show

Staff at Netflix’s HQ in Hollywood have joined protesters over the release of comedian Dave Chappelle’s stand-up show ‘The Closer’.

Chappelle has recently been in the firing line of cancel culture after making comments about transgenders during his hour-long Netflix special.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos responded to demands that the show be cancelled and removed from the streaming service by stating that it would not be removed despite backlash within and outside the company.

Protesters chanted “Trans Lives Matter” while pushing for Netflix to respond to a list of “asks” which includes hiring more trans executives and greater spending on transgender and non-binary content.

The organiser of the protests Ashlee Marie Preston stated, “We’re here to speak directly to Netflix. We tried to speak to Dave Chappelle but he was not having the conversation so we’re communicating directly with the people who sign the cheques. We’re not going away.”

Counter-protesters were also present at the demonstrations while displaying signs that read “We like Dave” and “Jokes are funny”.

Sarandos told Deadline that he should have made sure to recognise that a group of employees was hurting very badly from the decision he made, however, he continues to stand by his decision of not removing the special, stating, “We tell our employees that some of the content on Netflix you’re not going to like.”
