Holohan urges people to get back to basics amid rising cases

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan has urged people to get back to basics as Covid-19 cases begin to rise.

The basics that the CMO is referring to are social distancing, hang washing and the wearing of face masks, standards of which have slipped, according to Holohan.

Holohan warned that Covid-19 is going to become endemic and will cause challenges in terms of a surge in infections.

“That’s what society will be like, as we move forward, and we deal with the fact that Covid as a disease isn’t something that isn’t going to be eliminated.”

“It is going to be endemic, it is going to cause challenges for us in terms of surges of infection from time to time, that are going to have to be responded to in particular by having strong and effective public health services.”

The CMO was speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Philip Boucher-Hayes where he stated that although there is a substantial level of protection against Covid-19 through the vaccine rate, it isn’t enough while adding that “things have slipped”.

He said that people should be mindful of their own risks, adding that no one wants to go back to using “crude” measures to socialise less.

In relation to what Christmas would be like this year, Holohan said that people must make their own individual decision about social gatherings, in particular to settings where some people may not be vaccinated and have underlying conditions.

He added that the vaccine, although substantial, is not a silver bullet and urged anyone who displays symptoms of Covid-19 to stay at home.
