Gardaí conduct major speed operation today as part of National Slow Down Day

Gardaí will be conducting major speed operations throughout the country as part of National Slow Down Day.

Motorists are being urged to slow down with high visibility garda activities in all 1,322 speed enforcement zones in operation for the next 24 hours.

The operation aims to remind drivers of the dangers associated with speeding, increase speed limit compliance, and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speeds.

Although enforcement activity will be focussed across all speed limit zones, there will be a particular focus on rural roads.

Gardaí stated that this is due to the fact that almost four out of five fatalities occur on rural roads where the speed limit is 80km/h or above.

While thanking drivers who drive safely and within speed limits, Superintendent Thomas Murphy said, “However, there are some drivers who ignore our speed limits and put themselves and others at risk. This is especially true on rural roads which are often narrow and where bends and corners restrict a driver’s vision,”.

He has also asked for people to support National Slow Down Day not just today but every day.
