COVID-19: Booster campaign for over-60s to begin next month

Booster vaccinations will be administered to over 800,000 people aged between 60 and 80 years old at the start of next month.

The majority of those over the age of 70 will be administered the vaccine in their local GP surgery while those aged between 60 and 70 will likely receive it in mass vaccination centres.

After being approved by Cabinet yesterday, officials are now working on the details of the rollout of the boosters.

Officials have also stated that supply isn’t an issue and that two million doses of the Pfizer vaccine are in stock.

Some people in this age cohort may have to wait a little longer for a booster dose to allow for six months to pass since their second dose.

Beforehand, the HSE was only administering boosters to three categories, over-80s, people in residential care over 65, as well as immunocompromised individuals. To date, over 100,000 booster vaccines have been administered so far.

The HSE plans to complete the administration of booster vaccines to nursing home residents and other residential centres by the end of next week.
