Donald Trump sues US House committee investigating Capitol riots

Former US President Donald Trump has taken legal action against the US House committee, which is currently investigating the Capitol riots that occurred on the 6th of January.

The panel is investigating if the deadly riots were a result of the actions taken by the former president, who had made claims that election fraud was responsible for him losing the election to Joe Biden.

Mr. Trump has now taken legal action against the committee, alleging that it made an illegal, unfounded and overbroad request for his White House records.

He has asserted in the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, that the materials sought by the January 6th Select Committee are covered by executive privilege, which secures the confidentiality of some communications between White House officials.

However, many legal experts have stated that Trump cannot use executive privilege to block subpoenas issued by the House committee.

Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden had authorised the National Archives to turn over an initial batch of documents requested by the Select Committee.

National Archives is a government agency that holds records in relation to Donald Trump’s time in office.

The Select Committee has also demanded testimony from Trump advisers, which includes political strategist Steve Bannon.

However, Bannon will not provide testimony until Trump’s assertion of executive privilege has been resolved by a court or negotiations with the committee.

Due to Bannon’s defiance of the subpoena, the committee stated last week that it would formally ask the US Justice Department to bring criminal charges against him.
