School closes after more than 30 cases of Covid-19 detected

A primary school in Wexford has closed until after the mid-term break, following more than 30 cases of Covid-19 detected at the school.

In a message to parents yesterday, the principal of CBS Primary School in Wexford Town said a decision was made by the board of management due to the high volume of cases in the school.

Vicky Barron said the school was notified of one positive case on October 8th, but that a number of cases were notified in the following days.

On Tuesday October 12th, all children in the class were deemed as close contacts and sent for testing, but their siblings were advised to continue attending school.

Barron said as the week progressed, there were 19 positive cases in the class and a number of siblings of those class members then tested positive.

She said there is now over 30 cases within the school population and she is expecting more cases to arise.

“We are taking this emergency measure as a vital health and safety precaution for all,” Barron said.

“It is very clear that that are serious flaws in the HSE Guidance regarding protecting children in schools and the board of management has decided, in the interest for the health and safety of all our pupils and their families to implement these emergency measures.”

New regulations implemented last month mean primary school children who are close contacts of a confirmed case are no longer required to self isolate if they have no symptoms.
