Director of the UCD National Virus Reference Laboratory and member of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) Dr. Cillian De Gascun has announced the likeliness of Covid-19 case numbers rising but stated that this does not mean that vaccines are not effective.
He took to Twitter to state that vaccines are very effective in preventing severe illness and death from Covid-19.
This comes as NPHET are set to meet tomorrow to discuss the recent surge in Covid-19 cases and offer advice to the government in relation to the easing of restrictions on October 22nd.
With 2,180 new cases confirmed yesterday, De Gascun stated that while vaccines were effective in preventing serious illness, they are not able to eradicate the virus.
“Whilst vaccination reduces the risk of Delta infection, fully vaccinated individuals have viral loads similar to unvaccinated & can efficiently transmit infection in household settings, including to fully vaccinated contacts.”
