Record 910,000 people are on hospital waiting lists

The number of people who are currently on hospital waiting lists is now just under 910,000 which is a record high.

A total of 654,000 people are awaiting a first outpatient consultation, which is up 41,000 since 2020.

Former president of the Irish Medical Organisation Dr. Martin Daly described the figures as a huge concern while stating, “It is extremely worrying and it is a story of tragedy for many families who are waiting for medical interventions in a hospital setting.”

Stating that “these waiting lists are something this country should not be proud of”, he added that the issue was not simply just a result of the pandemic.

Dr. Daly said that the Covid-19 pandemic crystallised the lack of capacity that exists in the health service.

The Irish Hospital Consultants Association has previously warned that the figures could climb to one million by the end of the year.

With HSE chief Paul Reid stating that “it is going to be a difficult winter”, the Budget has allocated an additional €250 million to the health service to cope with the waiting list crisis.

Reid added, “We’re putting in a number of initiatives throughout winter, funded by the Government, to support the hospital system.” Some of these initiatives include extra capacity in the hospital system as well as offering more community care outside hospitals.”
