UK Conservative Party MP David Amess has died following a stabbing attack that occurred earlier today in Eastwood Road North at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the incident, which occurred at approximately 12:05pm.
Amess is the second sitting MP to be killed in such circumstances in five years, following the 2016 death of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016 as she attended a constituency surgery.
Mr. Amess, who first entered parliament in 1983, had been an MP for Scotland West since 1997.
Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis paid tribute to Amess, stating, “One of life’s truly nice people, a gentleman, who was always ready to give his help to anyone who needed it.”
Labour Party leader Keir Starmer also paid tribute to Amess, tweeting, “Horrific and deeply shocking news. Thinking of David, his family and his staff.”
Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron described Amess as “a kind and thoroughly decent man. Words cannot adequately express the horror of what has happened today. Right now, my heart goes out to David’s family.”
UK police have stated that they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the murder.
