‘People will be patient’ if easing of restrictions on October 22nd doesn’t go ahead – Taoiseach

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the Irish people will continue to be patient if the reopening on October 22nd doesn’t go ahead as planned.

He said he would no pre-empt what restrictions will be lifted and what may remain ahead of the meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) early next week.

Martin said the data presented to Government on the recent rise in cases is a matter of concern.

He applauded the public as being exceptional in terms of accepting restrictions since they were first imposed.

“I think people have been patient,” the Taoiseach said.

“I think people understand this pandemic now. They know there has been – and will continue to be – twists and turns in relation to the disease.”

“The key point is that we are in a much different position now to where we were because of vaccination – it transforms the environment totally.”

Martin said earlier this week that he cannot guarantee the reopening planned for October 22nd will go ahead.
