Transgender Netflix staff will be staging a protest against the streaming service’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos for expressing his support towards comedian Dave Chappelle, who has recently entered the line of fire over his standup special ‘The Closer’.
Chappelle’s new comedy special has recently come under fire after making jokes that some people deemed as ‘offensive’ and ‘transphobic’.
The leader of the protest group wrote to Netflix staff stating, “Trans Lives Matter. Trans Rights Matter.”
During the show, Chappelle announces his support for author J.K Rowling’s views on transgenders while adding that you should never make the gay community upset, speaking about DaBaby’s comments at a music festival.
Explaining that he was simply making a commentary on today’s world, the comedian explained how he doesn’t have an issue with the transgender community.
Despite his explanation, many people have called for the special to get removed from Netflix.
Sarandos revealed that he would not be cancelling the special and that he supported Chappelle for trying to push the boundaries.
He told The Hollywood Reporter, “Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today, and we have a long-standing deal with him.”
“We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line.”
