October 22nd is not going to be ‘Freedom Day’ – Varadkar

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said October 22nd is not going to be “Freedom Day” in Ireland as the final restrictions are due to be lifted.

Varadkar couldn’t rule out some Covid-19 restrictions remaining in place after October 22nd.

Speaking on The Pat Kenny Show, Varadkar said “Freedom Day” is not a term the Irish Government ever used.

“‘Freedom Day’ is never a term that has been used by the Irish government,” he said.

“The plan is to go ahead and ease most of the legal restrictions on 22nd October, but that will depend on the case numbers over the coming days and the advice from NPHET.”

Varadkar said the pandemic is now “a pandemic of the unvaccinated”.

He said the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet early next week and then give advice to Government on the further easing of restrictions.

“We have to see what the outcome of that meeting is and what their advice is,” he said.
