Netflix co-CEO will not remove Dave Chappelle comedy special amid ‘offensive’ jokes

CO-CEO at Netflix Ted Sarandos has stated that the streaming platform will not be removing Dave Chappelle’s recent comedy special amid criticism that his jokes were preaching hate.

During the special, Chappelle jokes about being “team TERF” and states that he agrees with author J.K Rowling that “gender is a fact” as well as agreeing with previous jokes where he discusses cancel culture.

Responding to calls for the special to be removed from the platform, Sarandos stated that Chappelle’s special ‘The Closer’ doesn’t cross the line and that Netflix doesn’t allow titles that are “designed to incite hate or violence” while adding, “Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate,”.

He also stated that it can be difficult to “distinguish between commentary and harm” especially with stand-up comedy which “exists to push boundaries.”

“Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean-spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering,”.
