Mandatory vaccines for health workers and teachers in New Zealand

New Zealand has announced a new “no jab, no job” policy that requires most healthcare workers and teachers to get vaccinated. Responding to the strict policy, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins stated, “We can’t leave anything to chance so that’s why we are making it mandatory,”.

Doctors, nurses and other frontline healthcare workers have been required to get fully vaccinated by the 1st of December while anyone in the education sector who is in contact with students must be vaccinated by the 1st of January.

Describing the policy as “bold, but necessary”, president at the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners Samantha Murton stated that it’s being backed by the college.

Secondary schools will also be required to keep a register that will record the vaccine status of students.

The mandatory vaccination policy will also apply to home-based educators and parents volunteering at schools, however, no decision has yet been made on mandatory vaccines for the tertiary education sector.
