Google to ban ads and demonetise YouTube channels that promote climate change denial

In its attempt to tackle climate change denial, Google will be banning ads that promote such content while demonetising YouTube channels that promote the same content.

The company stated that its move will explicitly prohibit advertisements that contradict the “well-established scientific consensus around the existence and causes of climate change”.

YouTube channels will be demonetised if videos on the channel refer to climate change as a “hoax” or a “scam”, deny that long-term trends show that the global climate is getting warmer, and that greenhouse gasses along with human activity contribute to climate change.

Google currently bans advertisements from appearing alongside content about sensitive issues such as tragic events.

Google stated that it would be carefully observing content so that it can differentiate between content that spreads false claims as facts or simply discusses claims in relation to climate content.

However, the company added that it will continue to allow ads and monetisation on other climate-related topics such as “public debates on climate policy, the varying impacts of climate change, new research and more,”.
