Threatened Swedish Mohammed cartoon artist and two police officers killed in road incident

Swedish cartoon artist Lars Vilks, who had live under police protection since 2007 following his sketch of the Prophet Mohammed, has died in a road crash.

Lars was travelling with two police officers and their vehicle collided with a truck.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Thirteen years ago, Vilks drew a sketch of Mohammed with a dog’s body.

Dog’s are considered to be unclean by some Muslims, and Islamic law opposes any depiction of the prophet for fear it could lead to idolatry.

Al Qaeda ultimately put a bounty on Vilks’ head. There has been numerous attempts and plots to kill Vilks, including in 2010 when two men attempted to burn down his house in Sweden.

Likewise, last year a woman in Pennsylvania pleaded guilty to a plot in an attempt to kill him.
