3,000 paedophiles identified in French Catholic Church following investigation

An independent commission investigating a scandal in the French Catholic Church has identified some 3,000 paedophiles operating inside the church since the 1950s.

Between 2,900 to 3,200 paedophiles have been uncovered by the commission’s research. Adding that the figure was “a minimum estimate”, French civil servant Jean-Marc Sauve said that it consist of priests and other members of the church.

The report also looked into “the mechanisms, notably institutional and cultural ones” within the church that allowed paedophiles to remain where they were, with 45 proposals to be offered.

Set up in 2018, the Bishops’ Conference of France and the National Congregations Conference (CORREF) was created in response to a number of scandals in the French Catholic Church.

The commission’s formation also came after Pope Francis passed a landmark measure that obliged those who knew about sex abuse in the Catholic Church to report it to their superiors.

The commission consists of 22 legal professionals, doctors, historians, sociologists and theologians and was created to investigate allegations of child sex abuse by clerics dating back to the 1950s.

The report will be delivered to the CEF and the CORREF and will be released at a press conference to which representatives of victims’ associations are invited to attend.

A message from the church authorities to priests and parishes warned that the publication of the report would be “a harsh and serious moment” and will call for “an attitude of truth and compassion”.
