NPHET’s briefings to permanently end as team moves to ‘surveillance mode’

With health officials reverting to their original duties later this month, press conferences held by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will permanently come to an end.

Sources from NPHET have indicated that while some officials will make occasional media appearances, it’s unlikely that any more press conferences will be held as Ireland exits the emergency phase of the pandemic.

This comes as the government announced that the team would be significantly scaled back after the 22nd of October.

Although public health experts will still be able to advise the government, it’s expected that a smaller team lead by the Department of Health will be implemented and that NPHET will move to ‘surveillance mode’.

It’s understood that the Department of Health currently has no plans for another media briefing.

NPHET’s last public briefing was on the 24th of August, with their latest update being issued yesterday evening through a statement that confirmed that there were 1,271 new cases of Covid-19 recorded in the country.
