‘Covid bonus’ would be ideally paid to frontline workers before the end of 2021 – Varadkar

The Government is currently discussing measures to reward frontline workers for their work during the pandemic.

An extra Bank Holiday and tax credits are among the measures under consideration, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said.

Varadkar said he expects the bonus to be paid to Irish workers before the end of the year.

Speaking from Washington on Monday, Varadkar said: “I think if there is going to be a pandemic bonus, and I think there should be, it’s likely to fall into this financial year in terms of cost.”

“It would ideally be paid before the end of this year, and therefore it would not impact on the budget for next year.”

Frontline workers outside of the health service, such as those in retail and transport, are expected to benefit from the bonus.

Varadkar said it was easier for the Government to provide bonuses to public sector workers, than private sector workers, but alternatives are being examined.
