A video that emerged on social media went viral after it showed McCarron leaving the hospital against the advice of medical staff under the encouragement of anti-vaccination campaigners.

Two days after his departure, he was returned to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties but was sadly pronounced dead on Friday.

According to gardaí, a senior investigating officer has been appointed to oversee the investigation into this incident at Letterkenny University Hospital as well as a number of other incidents.

The Saolta Hospital Group, which runs the hospital, had made a previous statement that it was “gravely concerned” by a number of recent incidents at two different hospital sites in which groups of activists attempted to spread disinformation about Covid-19.
