Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney will be discussing topics such as Northern Ireland and Brexit with the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi today.
The main topics that will be discussed are US/Irish relations, issues affecting Northern Ireland, the ongoing implementation of the Brexit agreement as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Coveney will also be meeting a large number of cross-party senators and members of Congress which include the Friends of Ireland Caucus.
In relation to Northern Ireland, President Joe Biden warned UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week that the Northern Ireland peace process should not be jeopardised by issues dealing with the Northern Ireland protocol.
Biden also stressed the level of importance of maintaining the Good Friday Agreement.
“I would not like to see – nor would many of my Republican colleagues – a change in the Irish accord,”.
Coveney stated yesterday evening in New York that anyone who thinks that Biden doesn’t understand the consequences of Brexit for Ireland hasn’t been listening to what Joe Biden has been consistently saying for years.
