Minister of State for Justice Hildegarde Naughton has said nearly 100 domestic abuse incidents have been reported to Gardaí every day this year.
24,686 domestic abuse incidents were reported up to September 9th of this year, meaning approximately one report was made every fifteen minutes.
Just under 9,000 cases (one third) were reported in Dublin alone, with 2,021 in Cork, 1,202 in Limerick, 1,152 in Louth and 1,074 in Galway.
“I am working with my colleagues and with our partners to ensure we have an appropriate collective national response that supports victims and holds perpetrators to account,” Naughton said.
“An Garda Síochána attaches the highest priority to domestic abuse incidents. Operation Faoiseamh – an ongoing initiative – was established to ensure there was proactive and targeted action and supports for those affected during the pandemic.”
The Minister said that when any victim presents themselves to Gardaí, “they’re met with a consistently high standard of specialist, professional and expert assistance.”
