The Taoiseach has ruled out an investigation into discovering what member of Cabinet leaked the appointment of Katherine Zappone as a UN Special Envoy.
Micheál Martin said Matt Carthy TD of Sinn Féin had no evidence whatsoever that Minister Simon Harris leaked information about the proposal.
When asked whether he wanted an investigation into what member of Cabinet was behind the leak, Martin replied: “No, let’s get real here, Matt Carthy had no evidence whatsoever. He admits he had no evidence.”
“He threw it out there. Sinn Féin are into that politics, they have a track record in terms of failure to respect the House and the convention of the House and the privilege and they have abused privilege in the past in the Dáil,” he continued.
“The Government is focused on the substantial issues that are before us. Yesterday we had a long meeting on the National Development Plan and on the economy and the lead up to the Budget.”
Martin went on to say there have been leaks and briefings to media over the past number of years, and this is “part and parcel”.
