Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris has stated that he is ‘strongly’ considering making a complaint against Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy, stating that the allegation made towards him was a misuse of Dáil privilege.
Harris stated that the comments made by Carthy would be defamatory if they had been said anywhere else while reiterating that the comments were untrue.
While speaking under privilege during a Dáil debate yesterday, Carthy accused Harris of leaking from Cabinet.
He made the claim during a debate ahead of a confidence vote in Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney.
Stating that the Taoiseach has the responsibility of investigating the leaking of Cabinet information, Carthy said that he does not have “the basis of the evidence” to support his contention as it is with Fine Gael.
Carthy said that his remarks were not a surprise to anyone in the Oireachtas, in the media or within Government circles while adding that he doesn’t think that “there should be any problem with the public being aware of what is the talk of Irish political circles”.
