Fine Gael TD Colm Brophy described allegations made towards Minister Simon Harris in the Dáil yesterday as “an abuse of Dáil privilege”.
Sinn Féin politician Matt Carthy accused Minister Harris of leaking from Cabinet while speaking under privilege during a Dáil debate yesterday.
The debate was underway ahead of a confidence vote in Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney amid controversy over the appointment of Katherine Zappone as a UN special envoy.
Describing the accusation as “appalling”, Brophy said that it was “almost scary” the way Sinn Féin acted in relation to the controversy, claiming that the party has done this before.
He claimed that the party came out with the allegation as their motion of no confidence isn’t attracting the level of attention that they desired.
Minister of State Pippa Hackett said that if an investigation is required into the leak of the Zappone appointment, it would be up to the Taoiseach to decide.
“The job of investigating a leak falls to the Taoiseach. So if the Taoiseach wishes to set up an investigation he can and is fully entitled to do that”.
