Tributes paid to DUP councillor (46) who died after contracting Covid-19

Tributes have been paid to a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) councillor who died in hospital on Tuesday, where it is understood he had contracted Covid-19.

Former mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Paul Hamill was the father of two children.

DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson said: “Paul was a hard-working and dedicated representative for the people of the Macedon area and his loss will be keenly felt.”

“We in the Democratic Unionist Party have lost a dear friend and colleague, but my thoughts are with Paul’s wife Ruth, his children and the wider family circle,” Donaldson continued.

“They will be in our prayers as Ruth mourns her husband and the girls try to understand the loss of their daddy.”

First Minister Paul Givan said: “Paul was a dedicated councillor, he was committed to serving the local people. His heart was in serving the local community and it is a tragic loss.”

“It just brings home that reality that Covid is still with us, it does affect people of all ages and that is why we need to continue to take responsible decisions in managing Covid,” he continued.
