Almost half of all Covid-19 tests carried out last week were in children – HSE

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed that almost half of Covid-19 tests carried out last week were in children.

HSE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Paul Reid said that 45% of tests carried out last week were in children aged between 0-18.

However, he noted that transmission rates in schools remain lower than in the community.

Reid said the best thing for children is for them to remain in school.

He went on to say that the 12,000 children out of school at the moment due to being close contacts of a confirmed case is a relatively small number out of one million school children.

Infectious disease consultant Dr. Clíona Ní Cheallaigh said that a lot of children under the age of 12 could have Covid-19 by Spring.

When it was suggested to Reid that most children could get Covid-19 by Spring, he said the HSE does not expect this will happen.
