In an attempt to tackle vaccine resistance in America, US President Joe Biden has announced policies that will require most federal employees to get fully vaccinated.
Biden has also pushed for large employers to get their workers either vaccinated or tested weekly.
These new measures will apply to anyone who works for businesses with more than 100 workers, approximately 60% of all US employees.
In response to vaccine resistance, Biden stated, “We’ve been patient,” while adding, “But our patience is wearing thin, and your refusal has cost all of us.”
Biden’s announcement comes as America tackles a new wave of the virus that is being driven by the Delta variant.
With just over 62% of eligible Americans now fully vaccinated, the Biden administration has urged Americans to get free and widely available vaccines.
Biden’s latest moves are expected to be the subject of political and legal challenges.
Senior Republican on the House of Representatives committee that oversees health policy ‘Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ stated that Biden “is using fear, control, and mandates”.
Previously, Biden had required that all federal employees be vaccinated or get tested, with federal workers unions suggesting that they would accept the vaccine mandate.
Federal workers now have 75 days to get vaccinated or face termination unless they fall under limited exception categories.
