‘A bit rich’ of Sinn Féin to table Dáil no-confidence motion given their record – Taoiseach

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said it is “a bit rich” of Sinn Féin to accuse a party of cronyism, given the number of party members they have appointed to positions in Northern Ireland.

Martin said it was not a proportionate response for him to force Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney to resign, and “perspective and balance” is needed.

The Fianna Fáil leader said he expects all his TDs to vote against the motion of no confidence in Simon Coveney.

Sinn Féin said the appointing of former minister Katherine Zappone as a UN Special Envoy for Freedom of Opinion and Expression was done without an essential transparent process.

The motion of no-confidence states that Coveney has not credibly explained the manner in which the appointment was handled and the Taoiseach failed to take an appropriate response.

Matt Carthy TD said Sinn Féin has no choice but to table the motion of no-confidence.
