UK to send migrant boats back to France

British home secretary Priti Patel has ordered officials to rewrite maritime laws to allow Border Force officials to redirect migrant boats back to France to be dealt with by French authorities.

This follows yesterday’s G7 interior minister’s meeting where Patel stated that the British public expects results from French efforts to prevent ongoing migrant crossings.

It was reported that Border Force members will be receiving special training to deal with migrant boats, however, pushback tactics will only be deployed when they’re deemed practical and safe to do so.

It’s been suggested that these tactics will only be used on larger migrant boats and in very limited circumstances.

However, it was reported by The Irish Times that the decision to use the tactics would ultimately be up to the captain of the vessel involved.

A range of options are being evaluated and tested to stop small boats from making the journey across the channel.

In wake of hundreds of migrants being brought ashore in Kent in recent days, Patel and French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin held discussions where Patel made it clear that tackling the quantities of people who make their way from France to the UK on small boats was her main priority.

One government source stated, “The Home Secretary was clear with the French interior minister that the British public expect to see results.”
