Micheál Martin claims he will take up the role of Tánaiste at the end of next year

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said today that he will lead Fianna Fáil into the next election.

Martin is currently participating in a Fianna Fáil think-in in Cavan today.

He went on to say that he will take up the role as Tánaiste in December 2022 under the Taoiseach rotation agreement in the programme for government.

“We have entered into a coalition government and we have made commitments in relation to that. I’m going to follow through on those commitments.”

Fianna Fáil has been struggling to perform well in recent years, in both domestic and European elections.

Martin also said that he has not ruled out a further coalition with Fine Gael.
