According to the Health Service Executive (HSE), Covid-19 transmission levels within schools are similar to what they were before the summer.
The HSE’s lead for schools stated that there are very early signals that the transmission picture is similar to what has been seen previously.
Dr. Abigail Collins stated that because the actual number of cases in those aged 0-18 years old is much higher than the end of the last academic year, it has resulted in more close contacts being identified.
She added that it would take a while before we get a clear picture of what the Covid-19 transmission levels in schools are, as students have only just returned.
She said that testing positivity among children with symptoms/no symptoms or who may have been close contacts from a household, community or club setting is around 7%, a decrease from last week’s figure of 13%.
“All of that data has been very similar to what we saw before Delta and very reassuring with the mitigation measures that we request to be in place.”
Dr. Abigail said that despite the high number of cases, there is no preliminary early signal that there will be anything vastly different when the results are published in relation to the immediate and day 10 results from the children who have been excluded due to being close contacts.
