COVID-19: Surge in demand for testing among children over the past week – HSE

There has been a surge in demand for Covid-19 testing among children over the past week, according to the Health Service Executive (HSE).

HSE national lead for testing and tracing Niamh O’Beirne said that walk-in and referrals for testing among children continued to grow.

Approximately 32,000 children were tested over the past seven days.

However, the percentage testing positive continued to fall, with the positivity rate now at 6%, which is down from 13% last week.

Children make up the highest proportion of tests carried out over the past week. The volume of children being tested is almost three times the next largest age cohort (15-24 year-olds).

O’Beirne said that testing has increased by 35% over the past week overall.

There has been Covid-19 cases in 1,011 primary schools and childcare facilities and 632 secondary schools since the start of the academic year, just weeks ago.
