Taoiseach Micheál Martin has commented on Tánaiste Leo Varadkar’s attendance at a UK music festival over the weekend.
Varadkar was photographed at the Mighty Hoopla festival on Saturday, with the image being circulated on social media.
The image was met with fierce criticism as the music festival took place on the same weekend that Electric Picnic was cancelled.
Martin described Varadkar’s attendance as “bad taste” and “poor judgement”, however, he added that Varadkar is “entitled” to private time.
“I think what the Tánaiste does in his private time is a matter for the Tánaiste.”
While stating that he made his position clear on the matter, Martin said that he doesn’t want to comment on the way that any individual has their private time to themselves.
“My view is, the Tánaiste in his private time is entitled to do in his private time”.
Minister Simon Harris also defended Varadkar, stating that he is entitled to some down time while adding that Varadkar has a busy week in the UK, Paris and Berlin.
