Face masks may be compulsory for primary school children

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) will be examining the possibility of extending the compulsory wearing of face coverings to children under the age of 13 in various settings such as schools.

This comes as schools reopen across the country with primary school students exempt from wearing a face mask.

HIQA will be examining the latest evidence on the minimum age for wearing face masks upon request by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

A spokesman from HIQA told the Irish Independent that the examination will provide advice on whether the current minimum age should be reduced.

A protocol that will outline the information considered is expected to be published in September.

A previous review that was conducted by HIQA back in March said that the age threshold for the wearing of facial coverings should remain unchanged while a spokesman for the Department of Education stated, “The advice regarding face masks has not changed for the new school year,”.

The spokesman also said that the department has always been guided by public health advice in relation to infection prevention and control measures appropriate for schools.
