Former League of Ireland footballer Sam Oji has died at the age of 35 years old. It’s understood that the 35-year-old had been suffering from an illness.
The former Arsenal youth team player joined Limerick Football Club in 2013 before signing for Galway United in 2015.
During his time in the League of Ireland, Oji made 57 appearances in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.
In the year 2016, Oji joined Worcester City and remained so until 2017.
His most recent team was Highgate United Football Club, where he had been appointed as assistant manager to Simon Johnson.
Highgate United Football Club tweeted, “All it is with a very heavy heart that I am deeply saddened to inform you, that our beloved Captain, Leader and Legend Samuel Oji has sadly passed away. The thoughts of all at Highgate United FC are with Sam’s wife, children and family at this very sad time.”
Galway United also paid tribute to their former defender, describing him as a “hugely popular person and a gentleman”.
Limerick Football Club described Oji as an “outstanding player and more importantly, an outstanding person”.
