Covid-19 restrictions likely to remain until October

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) met on Wednesday to finalise advice for Government ahead of a meeting with the Cabinet Covid-19 sub-committee on Friday.

Cabinet will then finalise plans for the roadmap of easing Covid-19 restrictions over the coming months.

The vast majority of people over the age of 16 will need to be vaccinated before NPHET will consider a widespread easing of restrictions.

It is believed that NPHET want somewhere between 85% and 90% of everyone over the age of 16 to be fully vaccinated before any further easing of restrictions.

Dr. Cillian De Gascun said yesterday that NPHET hopes to be in a position to advise Government to further ease restrictions in about six weeks.

“That’s the time when we will be in a position to progressively ease restrictions because people, the vast majority of the eligible population, will be protected at that stage,” he said.

He went on to say that in the next four to six weeks case numbers will plateau from the Delta wave.
