United States FDA fully approves Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine

The US Food and Drug Administration has fully approved the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for people over the age of 16.

The vaccine had already been approved under an emergency use authorisation last year.

The full approval of the vaccine will likely lead to a further uptake in vaccinations in the US, with US media reporting that the move might see businesses and universities requiring vaccinations.

“The FDA’s approval of this vaccine is a milestone as we continue to battle the Covid-19 pandemic,” acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said.

“While millions of people have already safely received Covid-19 vaccines, we recognise that for some, the FDA approval of a vaccine may now instill additional confidence to get vaccinated.”

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) last December, paving the way for the rollout across Europe.
