WATCH: Terrible scenes as thousands of Afghans attempt to flee country at Kabul airport

Thousands of Afghans have surged on to the runway at Kabul airport in an attempt to get on a flight to flee the country.

The US military has secured the area, to evacuate US citizens and to maintain order.

Commercial flights have mostly been suspended in the country, leaving few flights for thousands of people to get a seat on.

The Taliban made rapid advances across Afghanistan over the past few months, but particularly in the past week, after US President Joe Biden withdrew the majority of US troops from the region.

The Taliban declared that the war is now over and the group have taken control of the Presidential Palace.

Following the Taliban taking control of the Presidential Palace, Afghan people attempted to flee the nation over fears of how the Taliban will rule the country.
