Death toll from Haiti earthquake soars to almost 1,300

The death toll from the magnitude 7.2 earthquake which hit Haiti has risen to 1,297.

The earthquake, which took place on Saturday, also left nearly 6,000 people injured and countless people are left with broken or displaced homes.

The devastation caused by the earthquake could soon worsen as Haiti is expected to be hit with heavy rain, flooding and landslides from tonight.

The epicentre was roughly 125 kilometres west of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

Haiti is already struggling to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, the assassination of the country’s President and a wave of gang violence.

The extremely poor nation is still building back after the devastating earthquake in 2010.

The earthquake which hit the country in 2010 left more than 200,000 people dead.
