Limited time to prevent the worst of climate change – Ryan

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has stated that the latest UN report on climate change is “a stark reminder that we have limited time” to prevent the worst of climate change.

The report, which came from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), stated that it is now “unequivocal” that human activity is the cause behind the warming of the earth’s atmosphere, ocean and land.

It went on to add that the opportunity for humans to take action to reverse or slow the process was closing.

IPCC co-chair Valérie Masson-Delmotte stated that the report was a reality check while adding, “We now have a much clearer picture of the past, present and future climate, which is essential for understanding where we are headed, what can be done, and how we can prepare.”

While stating that there was now no doubt that human-driven climate change was happening right now, Eamon Ryan described the cost of ignoring the issue as “catastrophic”.

In order to tackle the issue, Ryan stated that a major system change is needed, which includes moving away from fossil fuels.

He added that we need to implement major changes around land use and forestry, which would involve paying and supporting a generation of farmers and foresters to help avert the crisis.
