Lionel Messi has confirmed he is leaving FC Barcelona following a week of speculation over the football megastar’s future at the club.
The 34-year-old spent his entire football career at Barcelona, having come through the clubs academy, before making 778 appearances for the club and scoring 672 goals.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner has been a free agent since July, after he failed to agree terms of a renewal before his previous contract expired.
Barcelona announced that Messi was set to leave the club after a new contract couldn’t be agreed.
Messi has been linked to a move to Paris Saint-Germain, but the football star said he has not yet made up his mind.
“I’m so grateful for the love people have shown me these years,” Messi said.
Messi went on to say his departure is the most difficult moment of his career.
“I’ve been here my entire life, I’m not ready for this. And last year with all the nonsense, I was convinced of what I wanted to say, but this year it is not the same,” he continued.
“This year my family and I were convinced we were going to stay here, that is what we all wanted more than anything.”
