The entire nation woke up feeling proud this morning as Dublin’s Kellie Harrington claimed gold at the Olympic finals.
Harrington was facing reigning world champion Beatriz Ferreira in the women’s lightweight final.
The Dubliner won the bout on a unanimous decision 10-9, becoming the third Irish boxer to win an Olympic gold medal, after Katie Taylor Michael Carruth.
“I feel relief. Anyone who steps in between those ropes is a champion. Every fight has been a tough fight, a gold medal fight,” Harrington said.
“I just can’t wait to get back home, to lie on the couch, to sleep, to rest, I’m absolutely exhausted to be honest. And my hair, I’m like a fluffy pigeon going around, I’m that right. What a journey, it was just fantastic.”
Following the fight, Harrington was shown a clip of scenes across the country after she won the gold medal.
“I didn’t even think anyone would be up watching,” Harrington said as she became visibly emotional.
