First look at Cinderella’s genderless fairy godmother

There have been many movie renditions of the story Cinderella but none have incorporated the modern world as much as Amazon’s new take on the film, whose recent trailer features a new look for the fairy godmother.

The fairy godmother, who is being played by Billy Porter, will be played by a man for the first time ever.

However, this is not the only modern take that Amazon has used for the film as Billy Porter’s fairy godmother is understood to be genderless.

Reflecting on his new role, Porter stated, “Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless – at least that’s how I’m playing it.”

He added that it’s going to be a classic fairytale for a new generation while stating, “I think the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grown-ups that are slowing stuff down.”

The film will be starring Broadway legend Idina Menzel as Cinderella’s stepmother Vivian, James Bond star Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan and of course James Corden who will be playing the role of a mouse which is a downgrade from his former role as a cat in the musical ‘Cats’.

But what would a Cinderella movie be without the princess herself ‘Cinderella’, well Camila Cabello has stepped in to save the day, playing the role of the housemaid who lives under constant scrutiny from her stepmother and two stepsisters, whose faith is eventually rescued by the fairy godmother. But let’s not give away too much…

The movie is scheduled for release on Amazon Prime Video on the 3rd of September, in the meantime, you can watch the trailer below.
