Ireland is getting “very close to the end of the pandemic”, Immunology Professor Paul Moynagh said.
Moynagh said the country is moving towards an endemic phase.
The Maynooth University Professor said that the virus will still be circulating in the background, but most people will be protected as a result of vaccination or natural immunity.
Moynagh said that a few weeks ago the projections were not good, but that recently all the critical data, such as hospitalisations and case numbers, is going down in the right direction.
He said Ireland, along with the UK and many EU nations, could be getting close to the end of the pandemic phase.
“I think we’re getting to the stage where a number of countries like ourselves, the UK and most countries in Europe – are getting very close to the end of the pandemic phase, and will probably move more into an endemic phase,” he said.
“The virus will be circulating in the background, but thankfully most of us will be protected by either vaccination or natural immunity through infection.”
